The U.S. National Science Foundation is a U.S. federal agency whose mission includes funding research and education in all fields of fundamental science and engineering, except for the medical sciences. NSF support represents 24 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by United States’ colleges and universities. Part of the NSF portfolio includes programs to increase knowledge of the factors that impact the participation and success of women, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and research and to develop models and strategies to address these factors. The NSF ADVANCE program has focused on developing organizational change strategies for institutions of higher education to increase gender equity in STEM academic careers since 2001.
